Overall: Steam Locomotive 2010

Overall Project in Nairobi 2010

We worked in cooperation with local citizens to reconstruct a huge steam locomotive with patchworks created from their unwanted clothes. The steam locomotives were used on the Kenyan railway system during the early 20th century. The growth of the city of Nairobi began with the construction of the railways and the traffic resulting from the steam locomotives. Steam locomotives were, however, gradually replaced by diesel and electric locomotives. Our temporary open atelier moved around the suburbs of Nairobi, and a lot of residents, workers and children from the neighboring areas spontaneously joined us making patchworks at their ease. At the end of the project, we collectively put on the completed giant patchworks and marched along the Kenyan railway.
